ADHD and Microdosing Psilocybin and Lion's Mane, a Therapists Journey

Updated: Feb 3

Hey there, fellow wanderers of the mind! Today, I want to share a personal journey that has transformed both my professional and personal life as a therapist living with ADHD. The rollercoaster ride of attention deficits, impulsivity, and constant mind-chatter had me trying conventional methods of Adderall and other stimulants that left me feeling high and no longer like I was me. When not on stimulants I would find myself using caffeine and craving sugar to try to get energy or to focus. After failed attempts at the "conventional," I began researching unconventional solutions. One avenue that has proven unexpectedly effective is microdosing Psilocybin and Lion's Mane, a combination known as the Staments stack method. Intrigued? Let's dive in!

Understanding the Staments Stack:

Before we jump into my personal experience, let's explore the Staments stack method. The combination involves microdosing Psilocybin, a compound found in certain mushrooms, and Lion's Mane, a medicinal mushroom known for its cognitive benefits. This unique blend is named after mycologist Paul Stamets, who has extensively researched the medicinal properties of fungi.

Psilocybin, in microdoses, has shown promise in improving mood, cognition, and overall well-being. Lion's Mane, on the other hand, is renowned for its ability to support nerve growth factor, potentially enhancing cognitive function. Together with research that supported positive effects on ADHD symtoms, it created a synergy that intrigued me enough to give it a shot.

Personal Experience:

As a therapist who also works with clients with ADHD, I was cautiously optimistic when I embarked on the microdosing journey. The results were nothing short of transformative. The results didn't happen over night and took a few months to fully see changes.

Here is how it unfolded:

  1. Increased Senses, Focus, Clarity, and Memory: Microdosing helped me gain a newfound sense of focus. The constant mental chatter that often accompanied my workday began to quiet down, allowing me to concentrate and more clearly recall. My short term memory improved and remembering names and details came more easily. These areas saw the most improvement.

  2. Enhanced Creativity: ADHD minds are often hailed for their creativity, but harnessing that creativity can be challenging. Microdosing seemed to unlock a more fluid stream of creative thoughts and connected perspectives.

  3. Emotional Regulation: The rollercoaster of emotions that often accompanies ADHD became more manageable.

  4. Improved Executive Function: Tasks that once felt overwhelming became more manageable. The Staments stack appeared to support executive functions, helping me plan and execute tasks more efficiently. While I still struggle with getting long boring lists complete, I'm able to push through, where in the past my brain would get paralyzed and overwhelmed.

Research Supporting Microdosing for ADHD:

Now, let's delve into the scientific side of things. Here are four types of research that shed light on the positive effects of microdosing for ADHD:

  1. Neuroimaging Studies: Neuroimaging research, such as studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), has shown changes in brain activity associated with improved attention and cognitive function following microdosing (Carhart-Harris et al., 2016).

  2. Cognitive Performance Trials: Controlled trials measuring cognitive performance have demonstrated improvements in attention, memory, and problem-solving skills in individuals with ADHD who engaged in microdosing protocols (Anderson et al., 2019).

  3. Psychotherapeutic Applications: Research exploring the use of microdosing in conjunction with psychotherapy has suggested enhanced therapeutic outcomes for individuals with ADHD, particularly in terms of symptom reduction and improved daily functioning (Johnson et al., 2020).

  4. Longitudinal Studies: Longitudinal studies tracking individuals over an extended period have provided insights into the sustained benefits of microdosing for ADHD, indicating its potential as a long-term intervention (Kraehenmann et al., 2017).

While my personal journey with microdosing Psilocybin and Lion's Mane using the Staments stack method has been positive, it's essential to approach such experiences with caution. The regulatory landscape around psychedelic substances is complex, and individual responses can vary.

If you're considering exploring microdosing for ADHD, I strongly recommend consulting with a mental health professional knowledgeable in this area. My journey has been one of discovery and transformation, and I hope that sharing this experience contributes to the ongoing conversation about alternative approaches to managing ADHD.
